Originally from New York, Stephen Vitiello is now an associate professor at VCU. He is an installation artist who works with sound. During his career, he has working with artists such as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler, and Dara Birnbaum. He has also composed music for independent movies and other video projects. The majority of his work focuses on the ways in which sound informs our environment.

His most notable and widely recognized work was completed in Tower 1 of the twin towers in 1999. He recorded the sound of the building swaying from the 91st flood. The recording took place after Hurricane Floyd and the result was a crackling noise. The sound bites Vitiello has posted on Soundcloud are engaging, but I imagine his installation works are more powerful. Engineering sound for a specific space enhances the audience’s experience on multiple levels. I will experience sound differently when I am in my room on my computer versus a gallery.
